RHINO, Alternative housing organization in Boulevard des Philosophes, Geneva, Switzerland.
RHINO was an alternative housing organization located on Boulevard des Philosophes in Geneva, consisting of two interconnected buildings serving multiple functions. The structures housed about 70 residents and contained shared spaces including an independent cinema, bar, restaurant, and concert venue.
The organization was established in 1988 and operated the two buildings as a residential and cultural space for almost two decades. In 2007, Swiss authorities dissolved the association and carried out a police evacuation that resulted in nineteen arrests.
The buildings served as gathering places for alternative artists, musicians, and activists in Geneva. People used the spaces regularly to display their work and exchange ideas about social and cultural matters.
The location sits on Boulevard des Philosophes and is easiest to reach on foot or by public transport, as the area connects well with the rest of the city. Since the building is no longer publicly accessible, visitors can only view the exterior architecture and artwork from outside.
A large red papier-mache horn decorated the building facades and became the signature symbol of the place. This striking landmark grew to represent resistance against conventional ideas about property ownership and urban planning.
