Grottes de Réclère, Natural cave system in Jura, Switzerland.
Grottes de Réclère is a cave system in the Jura with about 1500 meters of passages and numerous limestone formations like stalagmites and stalactites. The network formed over millions of years through water erosion and displays impressive mineral structures.
The caves were discovered in 1886 and opened to visitors two years later, bringing evidence of early human settlement to light. Archaeological finds show that people used these spaces long before modern times.
The cave combines underground passages with a learning area about prehistoric times, showing how people have used this region for thousands of years. Visitors can see how closely nature and human history are connected here.
The cave maintains a constant temperature around 7 degrees Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit), so warm clothing is necessary. The guided tour lasts about one hour and leads over 580 steps through the passages.
Inside stands Switzerland's largest stalagmite, called the Dome, rising about 15 meters high. This formation displays complex mineral patterns created by thousands of years of water dripping.
