Chrüz, Mountain summit in Prättigau, Grisons, Switzerland

Chrüz is a 2,195 m slate foothill south of the Rätikon main ridge in the middle Prättigau, Grisons. It forms an even pyramid above the villages of Pany, Stels and St. Antönien and is the foremost part of the Schafberg–Chüenihorn–Chrüz side ridge. Marked mountain paths reach the summit from St. Antönien via Aschüel and Valpun, from Pany via Bova and Alpbüel, and from Stelserberg (Mottis) over Maiensäss and alpine pastures.

The name Chrüz has puzzled locals for generations; one explanation links it to the ridges radiating from the summit that resemble a cross. A local legend tells of herd bells and yodelling heard on moonlit nights although the cattle were elsewhere, followed by lost or fallen cows the next morning. An old man advised burying a cross on the summit, to be reburied whenever it surfaced after a hundred years, to break the spell. A cross now stands on the summit.
