Donjon du Bois des Brigands, Observation tower in Thierrens, Switzerland
The Donjon du Bois des Brigands is a wooden observation tower in Thierrens, Switzerland. It stands 16 meters (52 feet) tall, with a platform at 12 meters (39 feet) reached by 66 steps, offering views from the Napf to Mont Blanc.
The tower was built in 2006 by the Association du Bois des Brigands, following a project launched in 2000. It was inaugurated on 17 June 2006, after construction faced delays due to bad weather that spring.
The tower is the focal point of the Bois des Brigands, a forest area with three educational loops that start from the Refuge. Families and school groups often combine a climb with the interactive trails, which include games and observation posts about nature.
The tower is free to visit and open all year. From the parking at La Commounaille, a short walk of about 5 minutes brings you to the tower, and the climb is straightforward with sturdy stairs.
The tower was funded by selling square centimeters to supporters at 30 francs each, allowing people to become co-owners of the structure. The wood used is spruce and Douglas fir, and the top platform has an orientation table to identify the peaks.
