Stiftung Brasilea, Art museum in Rhine Harbor district, Basel, Switzerland
Stiftung Brasilea occupies a four-story industrial building from 1964 in the Rhine Harbor district, transformed in 2005 into a contemporary art exhibition space with raw materials and minimal finishes. The venue hosts three to four contemporary art exhibitions annually in the basement and ground floor level.
Walter Wüthrich founded the foundation after moving from Basel Harbor to Rio de Janeiro in 1939, where he connected with artist Franz Josef Widmar in the 1950s. This relationship became the foundation for the institution's collection and artistic direction.
The foundation's name reflects its deep connection to Brazilian cultural expression and artistic traditions. Visitors encounter works that showcase diverse artistic movements from South America alongside international perspectives.
The exhibition spaces are easily accessible across both levels with no special physical demands required for a typical visit. Plan sufficient time to view the artworks at a comfortable pace and explore the different gallery areas.
The collection contains over 500 paintings by Franz Josef Widmar, assembled over decades through Walter Wüthrich's patronage. This concentrated body of work by a single artist offers visitors a rare opportunity to understand the artist's development and range.
