Sperrstelle Frick, Military fortification in Frick Valley, Switzerland
Sperrstelle Frick is a former defensive line with multiple military installations spread across the landscape between the Gempen Plateau and Lauffohr. It comprises bunkers, tank barriers, and observation posts that functioned together as a connected defense network.
The installations were built between 1937 and 1941 by the Swiss Army as threats intensified across Europe. They were created as part of a larger defense strategy designed to protect the nation's borders.
The fortification shows how Switzerland approached national defense and what protection methods were considered necessary at the time. Today the installations remain visible evidence of this era and reveal how the Swiss Army adapted to local geography.
Many of the bunkers and positions are accessible today, with guided tours available to lead you through the installations. The various sites are best explored at a leisurely pace on foot or by bicycle.
One notable feature is the Bächlimatte artillery position, where preserved field guns and command posts show how the army organized its equipment. This position was occupied by the 3rd Division in 1940 and survives today as a concrete example of military equipment from that era.
