Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, International airport in Shuangliu District, China
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is an international airport located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of downtown Chengdu in Shuangliu District. The facility includes two parallel runways each measuring 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) in length, plus two passenger terminals that together handle over 40 million travelers each year.
The site served as a military airfield starting in 1938 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In December 1956 it converted to civilian operations, and today ranks among the busiest in western China.
Many travelers notice the large panda statue in the arrival area, which welcomes visitors and represents Sichuan's famous mascot. Local restaurants in the terminal serve dishes like mapo tofu and dan dan noodles, so guests can try the regional cuisine right at the airport.
Travelers can reach downtown Chengdu using Metro Line 10, which stops directly at both terminals. Buses run regularly to different city neighborhoods and to the newer Tianfu International Airport, which also serves Chengdu.
The terminal is often used by travelers continuing to Tibet, as it offers numerous daily connections to Lhasa. There is also a small tea stand before the security area where visitors can sample Sichuan's famous jasmine tea before boarding their flight.
