Zhenguo Temple, Buddhist temple in Haodong Village near Pingyao, China
Zhenguo Temple is a Buddhist temple in the village of Nianma, a few miles (about 8 km) north of Pingyao in Shanxi Province, and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ancient City of Pingyao. The complex holds several buildings arranged around a central courtyard, with the main hall from the Five Dynasties period as its oldest structure.
The temple was founded in the 10th century during the Northern Han period, making it one of the oldest surviving wooden structures in the country. Later dynasties added or restored parts of the complex, but the main hall kept its original form through those changes.
The temple holds painted sculptures from the Five Dynasties period, among the oldest surviving Buddhist figures in China. Visitors can stand close to these works and notice fine details in the coloring and the expressions carved into each figure.
The temple sits about 8 km north of Pingyao's old city and is easiest to reach by hired car or taxi. A visit here pairs well with a stop at the nearby Shuanglin Temple, making it a practical half-day trip from the old city.
The main hall of Zhenguo Temple was built without a single nail, with all wooden elements joined through a system of interlocking brackets and joints. This technique, known as dougong, spreads the weight of the roof evenly and is credited with helping the building last over a thousand years.
