Longyangxia Dam, Hydroelectric power station in Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China
Longyangxia Dam is a concrete arch-gravity structure spanning 396 meters at the entrance of the Longyangxia canyon on the Yellow River. The installation holds a reservoir of 24.7 billion cubic meters and powers a generating facility with a capacity of 1,280 megawatts.
Construction took place between 1976 and 1992, representing a major step forward in China's hydroelectric capabilities during the late 20th century. Its completion helped power development projects and agricultural systems across northwestern regions of the country.
The dam sits within Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, a region where modern infrastructure now coexists with traditional communities. Visitors experience firsthand how contemporary engineering has reshaped the landscape where Tibetan settlements once stood undisturbed.
The site is generally accessible, though internal tours of the power station remain limited due to operational safety restrictions. Visitors can view the structure from surrounding vantage points and explore the reservoir landscape at their own pace.
The power station operates alongside an 850 megawatt solar photovoltaic facility, creating a hybrid energy site that taps both water and sun. This pairing allows the location to produce electricity from two sources while managing water flow more efficiently.
