It was first climbed on July 5, 1958, by an American expedition.

Its name 'Gasherbrum' originates from the Balti words 'rgasha' (beautiful) and 'brum' (mountain).

Climbing Gasherbrum I requires obtaining a permit from the Pakistani government.

Gasherbrum I is part of the Gasherbrum massif, which contains several peaks above eight thousand meters.
