Zhangjiagang, county-level city in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China
Zhangjiagang is a county-level city in Jiangsu province, situated approximately 100 km (62 miles) east of Shanghai. It develops along the Yangtze River with a growing urban core, industrial port facilities, and surrounding rural areas.
The city was established in its current form in 1986 following a merger of several communes. Its location on the Yangtze River enabled rapid economic growth through port and shipping industries.
The best way to explore is by local buses or taxis, as distances between districts can be large. The best time to visit is autumn and spring when the climate is mild and air quality improves.
The city transformed into one of China's major steel and shipping ports in less than 4 decades. This rapid shift from agricultural area to industrial center reflects modern China's economic development in miniature form.
