Shunling Mausoleum, Tang Dynasty mausoleum in Chenjia Village, Xianyang, China
Shunling Mausoleum is a Tang Dynasty burial site in Shaanxi with a structured layout of inner and outer zones and a total area of around 1.1 million square meters. The complex combines ceremonial grounds and tomb chambers within a rectangular configuration.
The mausoleum was built during the Tang Dynasty and holds the remains of Yang, mother of Empress Wu Zetian who ruled one of China's most powerful periods. The dynasty itself spanned from 618 to 907 and left a lasting mark on Chinese culture.
Stone sculptures depicting officials, lions, horses, and mythical creatures line the ceremonial pathways, reflecting how the Tang Dynasty honored its deceased members. These carvings show the artistic standards of imperial funeral practices from that era.
The site is located northeast of Xianyang City and is accessible by public transportation from the urban area. It is best visited during daylight hours to properly view the stone sculptures and the full extent of the grounds.
The outer enclosure spans vast distances, creating a striking impression of the scale typical of imperial burial monuments from this era. The immense size of the entire complex reflects the status and influence of the family within the Tang court.
