Longsheng Rice Terrace, Agricultural terraces in Longsheng County, Guangxi, China
Longsheng Rice Terrace is an agricultural area on mountain slopes between 300 and 1,100 meters (985 and 3,610 feet) altitude, with stepped fields organized in patterns that follow the natural hillside contours. The site consists of interconnected levels where rice is cultivated during the growing season.
Zhuang farmers started building these terraces during the Ming Dynasty, with the work continuing and expanding through the Qing Dynasty period. This extended construction phase demonstrates how the project gradually transformed mountain slopes into cultivated land over several hundred years.
The stepped fields reflect farming knowledge passed down by Zhuang and Yao communities, who shaped these mountains into productive land over centuries. Visitors can observe how local people still maintain these terraces using methods adapted to the steep terrain.
Buses run from Guilin city to Longsheng County, from where local transportation reaches different viewing areas. Morning visits offer better lighting for viewing and photography, and less crowding than afternoons.
The fields transform through the seasons: water fills them like mirrors in spring, they glow green in summer, turn golden in autumn, and frost covers them in winter. Each season creates a completely different visual appearance of the same landscape.
