GR Shopping Mall, Shopping center in Shuguang Subdistrict, Beijing, China
The building spans six floors with 557,419 square meters (6 million square feet) of retail space, housing more than 1,000 shops, restaurants, entertainment facilities, and service providers within a single connected architectural complex.
Opened in October 2004, the complex held the global record for largest shopping center by gross leasable area until South China Mall exceeded it in 2005, while the commercial strategy evolved throughout the following decade.
This retail complex documents Beijing's shift from state-controlled commerce to consumer-driven economy, initially targeting wealthy shoppers before adapting to serve middle-class families in order to maintain occupancy and financial viability within a competitive market.
Changchunqiao Station on Line 10 provides direct subway access to the building, with additional connections planned through Line 12. Weekday mornings see fewer crowds than weekends when families visit. Parking facilities accommodate visitors arriving by private vehicle.
The structure earned the nickname 'Great Mall of China' due to dimensions measuring 1.5 times larger than Mall of America. Designers originally planned golden exterior cladding but opted for more conventional materials upon completion.

The world's major shopping malls have become much more than just places to shop. People spend the day there, sometimes even the evening, between restaurants, attractions, and relaxation zones. Some host adventure parks, others museums, an ice rink, or a ski slope in a desert climate. Each complex tells something about its era and city. In Dubai, galleries compete with futuristic architecture. In Bangkok, centers combine luxury, cuisine, and entertainment. In North America, the spaces are so large they resemble full little cities with internal streets and themed zones. From continent to continent, these sites attract millions of visitors seeking new experiences. This selection brings together the most impressive centers, offering total immersion through large-scale shopping, varied entertainment, and ever-evolving scenery.
