Bailong Elevator, Glass elevator in Wulingyuan, China
Bailong Elevator is a glass-cabin lift that climbs along a sandstone cliff in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The transparent cabins allow views of the rock face and surrounding mountain landscape throughout the ride.
Construction finished in 2002 after crews carved tunnels and shafts directly through the natural rock formation. This project significantly improved access to the upper areas of the canyon.
The name refers to celestial dragons in Chinese mythology, inspired by how the structure appears against the mountainside as it rises. This connection shapes how locals and visitors experience the journey along the cliff.
Each of the three cabins holds about 50 passengers and takes just a few minutes to travel from bottom to top. The ride feels stable and secure despite the glass walls running directly along the cliff face.
This structure holds several world records, including being the tallest outdoor elevator in the world. The combination of engineering achievement and natural setting makes it a rare example of this type of construction.
