Fiery Cross Reef, Reef in the South China Sea
Fiery Cross Reef is a group of three reefs on the western edge of Dangerous Ground in the Spratly Islands of the South China Sea.
The reef was named after the British tea clipper Fiery Cross, which ran aground there on March 4, 1860.
It's a disputed territory claimed by China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
China has built artificial islands on the reef, including a 3,000-metre runway and harbor facilities.
Despite being underwater at high tide before land reclamation, it now hosts a high-tech Chinese military base.
