Huiquanpu Formation, Geological formation in Hebei, China.
The Huiquanpu Formation is a geological site in Hebei and Shanxi with layers of purple-red mudstone and grey-white sandy conglomerate stacked on top of each other. The sequence rises about 200 meters high and reveals different periods of rock deposition.
This formation took shape during the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 99 to 71 million years ago. Ancient water environments built up the layers we see today through gradual sediment accumulation.
The site attracts researchers who come to study the rock layers and fossils. For visitors, this ongoing work offers a window into how scientists learn about Earth's past.
The site is located in an open area and remains accessible throughout the year for viewing. Sturdy footwear is recommended because the ground is uneven with exposed rocks and slopes.
Fossils of several dinosaur species were discovered within these rock layers, including Huabeisaurus and Jinbeisaurus. These findings show that this area was once home to diverse giant reptiles that lived millions of years ago.
