Dahuofang reservoir, reservoir in People's Republic of China
Dahuofang reservoir is a large artificial lake in eastern Liaoning Province that supplies water to the city of Shenyang. An underground tunnel stretching about 85 kilometers connects the reservoir to the city, carrying water from high rainfall areas to this dry and heavily industrialized region.
Construction of the tunnel began in 2005 using two large tunnel boring machines working side by side, completing their sections within two years. The project was divided into three sections about 20 kilometers each to address water shortages in Shenyang's industrial area.
This location is primarily known for its engineering project rather than as a leisure destination. Visitors should understand that it functions as a working water supply system, so access to certain areas may be restricted or limited.
The tunnel was constructed using massive boring machines with about 8 meter diameter equipped with dozens of cutting tools. These machines bored through complex migmatite rock and fractured terrain, revealing the challenging geology hidden beneath the earth in this region.
