People's Park is a 32.6-hectare green space in central Nanchang, filled with thousands of trees from many different species that provide shade and color throughout the seasons. The park has level pathways, planted flower beds, and a dedicated orchid garden set among the main grounds.
People's Park was established in 1954 under the name New Park and was renamed People's Park in 1958. Its orchid garden dates from 1963, created on the suggestion of Marshal Zhu De, who also wrote the park's name in his own calligraphy.
The park's name is written in the calligraphy of Marshal Zhu De, who in 1963 suggested creating the orchid garden that the park is known for. The layout follows Jiangnan garden style, and residents use the grounds for daily walks and gatherings.
The grounds are centrally located and freely accessible to all visitors, with benches for resting and shaded spots throughout. The pathways are flat and well-kept, making a comfortable walk or picnic enjoyable for all fitness levels.
The grounds contain one of the largest collections of different tree species found anywhere in the downtown area, which is unusual for an urban space. This botanical diversity developed through careful selection and gradual planting over many decades.
