Coffeehouse Union, Coffeehouse in Česká Lípa, Czech Republic
Coffeehouse Union is a cafe and cultural monument in Česka Lipa, built in the early 1900s in art nouveau style with three floors and a small tower at the corner. The building features large arched windows, decorative elements on its walls, and three separate entrances on the ground floor accessible from both streets.
The building was designed in 1906 and received a gold medal at the local industry fair before opening as a restaurant in 1907. Throughout the 20th century it served as a movie theater, retail shop, and sweets store, until the city purchased it in the 1990s and carefully restored it to its original early 1900s appearance.
The building has long served as a meeting place for local residents, particularly traders and people from the nearby Jewish district. It remains today a space where people gather to share coffee and daily moments, continuing traditions that span more than a century.
The building stands at a central corner location in downtown Česka Lipa and is easy to spot from the main streets. The ground floor operates as a working cafe, the upper floor houses a music venue with regular live performances, and additional spaces serve as offices supporting the cafe operations.
Architect Josef Jisba designed the building with floral-inspired art nouveau details that won a gold medal at the local industry fair in 1906, before it even opened. This award for the design alone shows how remarkable the structure was considered for its time.
