Dechen Cave, Show cave in Iserlohn, Germany
The cave system stretches over 902 meters through limestone formations, with 400 meters accessible to visitors through barrel-shaped passages filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
Railroad workers discovered the cave in 1868 when they dropped a hammer into a rock crevice, leading to the exploration of this underground limestone formation.
The cave received its name from Heinrich von Dechen, a mining official who made substantial contributions to the geological understanding of Rhineland and Westphalia.
The cave maintains a constant temperature of 10 degrees Celsius throughout the year and offers guided tours lasting 40 minutes through illuminated pathways.
The German Cave Museum next to Dechenhöhle contains the skeleton of a baby cave bear and a woolly rhinoceros skull found within the cave system.
