Naumburg Cathedral, Lutheran cathedral in Naumburg, Germany

Naumburg Cathedral is a Protestant place of worship in Naumburg that combines Romanesque arches with Gothic pointed vaults along its 95-meter structure. Both ends of the nave show separate choir areas, with the western section standing out for its sculptural work.

In 1028 the episcopal seat moved here from Zeitz, following the start of construction around 1001. The west choir with its figures took shape in the mid-13th century and shaped the appearance of this religious building ever since.

The name comes from the medieval town that grew around this religious center. Visitors today notice the colored glass windows in the west choir and the painted rood screen, showing how the building appeared in medieval times.

The church continues to serve as a Protestant parish, while guided visits provide access to the artworks and architectural elements. The west choir with its donor figures and the crypt require climbing some steps, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes.

The Elisabethkapelle preserves what is believed to be the oldest stone depiction of Saint Elisabeth. This sculpture shows the saint holding a model of her church, a rare motif in medieval stone carving.
