LVR open-air museum in Kommern

The LVR open-air museum spans 95 hectares and contains 67 historical buildings from the Prussian Rhine Province, including farmyards, windmills, and village structures.

The museum opened on July 20, 1961, after Kommern was selected from 30 competing locations through the advocacy of local representative Norbert Leduc.

Each section of the museum recreates different periods of Rhineland life, from the 15th century through the 1980s, with authentic furniture and household items.

Visitors can explore the grounds from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM between March and October, and from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM from November through March.

The museum features the Milchbar, a 1955 structure from Brühl, and employs actors who portray historical figures through the Gespielte Geschichte program.
