Berlin-Tegel Airport, Decommissioned airport in Reinickendorf, Germany
Berlin-Tegel is a decommissioned airport in the Reinickendorf district, roughly eight kilometers northwest of the city center. Its terminal building consists of a hexagonal structure arranged around an open courtyard and is characterized by short distances between gates and exits.
During the Soviet blockade from 1948 to 1949, a runway was built here for the airlift that supplied West Berlin with goods. The airport later became the city's main passenger terminal and closed only in November 2020 after decades of operation.
The facility served for decades as the city's international gateway and became known throughout Europe for its compact layout. Its hexagonal main structure stands today as an example of post-war architecture and remains protected as a monument.
The site is no longer accessible to the public as an airport since operations have ceased. The surrounding area remains reachable and shows the transformation of the place into a new urban district.
The former airport grounds are currently being developed into a research and technology district called Urban Tech Republic. The hexagonal main building remains as the centerpiece of the new neighborhood and is being converted for new uses.
