Zeche Vereinigte Gibraltar Erbstollen, Historical coal mine in Stiepel, Bochum, Germany
Zeche Vereinigte Gibraltar Erbstollen is a closed coal mine near Bochum-Stiepel featuring a tunnel system roughly 2000 meters long that served coal transport and drained water toward the Ruhr river. The site still displays remnants of mining buildings and industrial-era infrastructure.
The mine received its operating permit in 1786 from the Prussian mining authority and developed into one of the region's larger operations over time. Its working life ended as coal mining in the Ruhr declined during the 20th century.
The complex demonstrates how coal mining shaped daily work and community life in the Ruhr region for generations. The remaining structures and ruins tell the story of this industrial past that transformed the local landscape and society.
The site is located near Lake Kemnader and has long been limited in public access, with parts now used by Ruhr University Bochum. Walking routes along the lake offer good views of the historical structures and the surrounding landscape.
Between 1933 and 1945, the abandoned mine buildings served as a training camp for paramilitary groups during that political era. This overlooked aspect of local history shows how industrial sites were repurposed during that period.
