Westerwinkel Castle

Westerwinkel Castle is a moated castle in Ascheberg featuring four wings arranged around a central courtyard and multiple defensive water channels. The architecture displays Baroque elements added in the 17th century, while earlier structural components remain partially visible.

The original fortification was built here in the early 13th century. During the 17th century it underwent major redesign and acquired its current Baroque appearance with enhanced water defenses.

The castle exemplifies the building style of Westphalian noble residences and reflects the architectural preferences of German aristocracy. The layout with four wings surrounding an inner courtyard was typical for estates of this era and social class.

The grounds are open only at specific times on weekends, so check ahead before visiting. Parking is located some distance from the entrance, making comfortable footwear advisable.

The castle now shares its grounds with a golf club, blending the historic site with contemporary recreational activities. This unusual arrangement demonstrates how heritage properties adapt to modern uses.
