Oberkassel, Urban district in Beuel, Germany
Oberkassel is an urban district on the right bank of the Rhine near the Siebengebirge mountains with residential areas and research facilities. The neighborhood extends across flat terrain and is structured by various streets that connect residential blocks, green spaces, and institutional buildings.
The name originates from a Roman fortification, with early written records mentioning the settlement as Cassele in 722 and Cassela in 1144. The area developed over centuries from a small settlement into a modern residential district with research facilities.
The district is known for its research facilities, particularly the divisions of the German Aerospace Center, which shape science and innovation here. This presence gives the area an academic and technological character visible to many visitors.
The district is accessible via three Bonn Stadtbahn stations: Oberkassel Nord, Oberkassel Mitte, and Oberkassel Süd/Römlinghoven, offering direct connections to the city center. Visitors will find good infrastructure here with shops, restaurants, and parks for exploring.
In 1914, quarry workers discovered a 14,000-year-old grave containing two human skeletons and remains of one of the earliest domesticated dogs. This find shows that humans and dogs lived together in this area during prehistoric times.
