Zoologischer Garten Hof, Zoo in Hof, Germany.
Zoologischer Garten Hof is a zoo in the Upper Franconian city of Hof, home to animals from several parts of the world, including Bennett's wallabies, white-handed gibbons, and capuchin monkeys. The grounds are laid out in a compact way that makes it easy to move from one enclosure to the next on foot.
The zoo opened in 1954 as a way to bring animals from around the world closer to the people of Hof. In 1994, it was expanded as part of the State Garden Show and connected to the neighboring Theresienstein city park.
The zoo sits next to Theresienstein, one of the oldest city parks in Bavaria, and many visitors combine both in a single outing. This connection between park and zoo gives the visit a relaxed, outdoor feel that goes beyond simply watching animals.
The zoo is easy to walk through since the paths are clear and the whole area is manageable in size. Arriving earlier in the day tends to give a better chance of seeing the animals active, especially in warmer weather.
The zoo has a walk-through wallaby enclosure where the animals roam freely and visitors can get very close to them. Right next to it is an aviary where cockatoos and zebra finches fly around in the open, which makes for an unusual encounter with birds at close range.
