Freilassing Locomotive World, Railway museum in Freilassing, Germany.
Freilassing Locomotive World is a railway museum set inside an original round engine shed in Freilassing, Bavaria. The building is arranged around a central turntable from which several tracks radiate outward, and the display includes steam locomotives and other rail vehicles from different periods.
The site opened in 1905 as a locomotive maintenance depot and at its busiest employed over a thousand railway workers. It closed in 1994, after which the round shed was converted into the museum that visitors see today.
The name Lokwelt, meaning locomotive world, reflects how central rail life was to this corner of Bavaria. Visitors can walk freely among the vehicles and get a sense of what daily work in a railway depot looked like.
The museum is within walking distance of Freilassing train station and is accessible by wheelchair throughout. The metal and stone hall can get cool inside, so bringing an extra layer is a good idea, particularly in colder months.
The central turntable, built in 1902, is still in working order and is sometimes operated during visits so that people can see how locomotives were repositioned by hand. This makes it one of the few surviving working turntables of its age in a German railway museum.
