Museum of European Cultures, Ethnographic museum in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Germany
The Museum of European Cultures is an ethnographic museum in Berlin-Zehlendorf displaying objects and exhibits about European life from the 18th century to today. The galleries show how people across different European countries managed daily life, maintained traditions, and lived alongside one another.
The museum was founded in 1999 through the merger of two Berlin collections: the European department of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum for Folklore. This combination brought two different views of European life together in one place.
The collection shows how people across Europe lived and worked together. Crafts, celebrations, and everyday objects tell stories of connections between different regions and communities.
The museum is located in the oldest section of the Dahlem Museums complex and is easy to reach by public transport. It is spacious and clearly organized, allowing visitors to move around freely.
The collection preserves two Sámi shaman drums from northern Europe that date to the early 1800s and came from the royal Prussian art collection. These rare objects show how widely European museums gathered their holdings.
