Castle of Altenburg
Castle of Altenburg, Medieval castle and museum in Altenburg, Germany.
Schloss Altenburg stands on a hilltop and blends medieval fortifications with Renaissance palace architecture across multiple wings and towers. The building houses a museum displaying historical furniture, portraits, weapons, and regional artworks spanning several centuries.
The castle began in the 10th century as a defensive fortress and later became the seat of the Dukes of Altenburg. Over the centuries it underwent multiple reconstructions and expansions until reaching its present form.
The castle was home to the dukes of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, and their collections still shape how the rooms look today. The furnished chambers show how the ruling family lived and displayed their power.
Visits are possible Tuesday through Sunday and public holidays from 09:30 to 17:00, with each museum room accessible via corridors from the outside. There are stairs between different floors, so visitors with mobility challenges should check ahead.
The museum holds a special winter exhibition on chocolate history featuring historical trembling cups and casting molds that document European drinking habits. These cups show how chocolate was once enjoyed as a luxury item and reflect past dining customs.
