Historischer Friseursalon Altenburg

The Historic Barber Shop Altenburg is a preserved hairdressing business with complete original furnishings from the 1920s, including marble tables, mirrors, barber chairs, and mechanical hair-cutting machines. The space is divided into a front section and a back section with drying racks, showing how the salon functioned as two distinct work areas.

The building was originally constructed in 1537 and received a baroque facade and an additional floor during the 18th or 19th century. The barber shop itself operated from 1926 until 1966 under the ownership of Arthur Grosse.

The salon demonstrates how men and women had separate spaces for haircuts in the 1920s, with male customers in the front and female clients in the back near drying racks. This division reflects the social habits of that era and shows how differently a visit to the barber worked depending on your gender.

The salon is located at Pauritzer Strasse 2 and allows visitors to step into an authentic hairdressing setting from the 1920s. The interior is fully preserved, making it easy to understand how the shop operated on a daily basis.

A pulley system connected the two rooms of the salon and powered the mechanical hair-cutting machines. This technology demonstrates a practical solution from an era before modern electric motors and reveals the ingenuity of early 20th-century craftsmanship.
