Alt St. Martin

Alt St. Martin is a Romanesque church in Bilk featuring rounded arches and thick stone walls that support a prominent bell tower. The building stands as a solid structure composed of dressed stone blocks arranged in traditional medieval patterns.

The church was founded around 900 and ranks among the earliest religious structures in the Düsseldorf region. Its survival for more than a thousand years demonstrates the durability of medieval construction methods.

The name "Alt" refers to the long tradition of this place, which has served the community for centuries as a gathering point. The spaces carry traces of many generations who have prayed and celebrated their festivals here.

The main entrance is located on the western facade and provides direct access to the building's interior. The doors typically open in the morning hours and close in the late afternoon.

The stone blocks display chisel marks left by medieval stonemasons, visible upon close inspection. These craft marks reveal how workers shaped and fitted the stones together more than a thousand years ago.
