Altes Grassimuseum

The Altes Grassimuseum is an Art Deco building in Leipzig that brings three specialized museums under one roof. These focus on applied arts, ethnology, and the historical musical instruments of Leipzig University.

The building was constructed during the mid-1920s to late 1920s as Germany modernized its museum landscape. It endured heavy damage during World War II but was carefully restored starting in the years after the war.

The museum serves as a meeting point for artists and designers in Leipzig today. The annual Grassimesse fair in October displays work from craftspeople and creative professionals across the region.

You can enter the complex from several doors on different sides of the building. The interior connections between the three museums allow you to move smoothly from one section to another without stepping outside.

Eighteen tall windows along the main staircase were designed by Bauhaus master Josef Albers in 1926. These windows display the clean geometric language that defined the Bauhaus movement.
