Abtei Schweiklberg, Benedictine abbey in Vilshofen an der Donau, Germany
Abtei Schweiklberg is a Benedictine monastery located above Vilshofen an der Donau that combines Art Nouveau style with neo-Baroque features in its buildings. The complex includes guest quarters, conference spaces, and a large monastic library along with museum exhibition areas.
A monastery occupied this hilltop beginning in the 1600s, but the current abbey was founded in 1904 when Benedictine monks from St. Ottilien moved to the location. They created a religious and scholarly center from which to pursue their community's mission work.
The abbey displays its connection to Africa through religious artifacts and artwork gathered during its missionary activities in its exhibition spaces. Visitors can trace the story of this work through the objects and materials shown throughout the building.
Overnight accommodation is available in guest rooms with roughly 50 beds, and guided tours can be arranged to explore the exhibitions and buildings. The elevated position above the town provides views, though visitors need to be prepared for the climb to reach the site.
The monks produce a herbal liqueur called Schweiklberger Geist, traditionally made to help ease digestive issues and fatigue. This spirit represents how the community blends practical knowledge with their spiritual life.
