Alter Stolberg

Alter Stolberg is a forested ridge in the southern Harz foothills covering roughly 623 hectares and reaching about 358 meters in height. The landscape features varied forest types and karst formations that shape its character.

Protection measures for the area began in the 1960s to preserve the landscape from development and damage. Later expansion as a landscape protection zone extended safeguards to cover a much larger region.

The ridge has deep roots in the region's identity and is connected to the story of the Counts of Stolberg who once held power here. This historical link shapes how locals view and value the landscape today.

The northern slope functions as a strict reserve with many marked trails suitable for different fitness levels. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the forest terrain can be uneven and muddy.

The site supports over 300 plant species including gypsum fat herb, a rare plant found nowhere else in central Germany. This botanical feature draws the interest of plant enthusiasts and researchers.
