Affenberg Salem, Monkey park in Salem, Germany
Affenberg Salem is a 20-hectare forest area in Salem, Bodenseekreis, where 200 Barbary macaques live freely. No bars or ditches separate the animals from visitors, allowing natural interactions throughout the wooded enclosure.
The facility houses Germany's largest free-flying stork colony, with 50 breeding pairs nesting each year. These birds return annually to raise their offspring in the tall trees surrounding the monkey habitat.
Visitors observe the social behavior and daily routines of Barbary macaques through guided feeding sessions and educational presentations.
The park opens from March to November, offering admission for adults and children aged five and older. Visitors can follow paths through the forest and observe the monkeys up close at certain feeding stations.
Guests explore the park through an elevated network of 11 hanging bridges and 12 platforms, reaching heights of 12 meters (39 feet). These structures provide bird's-eye views of the forest canopy and the monkeys moving below.
