New Residence, Bamberg, Palace and historic site on Domberg, Bamberg, Germany
The New Residence is a Baroque palace on Domberg that served as the home and official seat of Bamberg's prince-bishops. The building holds several grand rooms with ornate ceiling paintings and a significant art gallery displaying works from different periods.
Construction started in the early 17th century under a prince-bishop and later received Baroque expansions that shaped the building we see today. The residence served as the governing center and home of Bamberg's church rulers until modern times.
The art gallery displays German and Baroque paintings collected by the Bavarian state over centuries. Sculptures by Ferdinand Tietz are placed throughout the rooms, showing how rulers decorated their homes with important works.
To see the grand interior rooms, visitors should join guided tours that are offered regularly throughout the week. The east wing houses the state library, so it is separate from the tour areas.
The building preserves more than 500 original furniture pieces from different periods of its use. This collection shows how the rooms were actually furnished when occupied by church rulers and later royal residents.
