Schloss Lieser

Schloss Lieser, Art Nouveau castle in Lieser, Germany

Schloss Lieser is an Art Nouveau castle in Bernkastel-Kues along the Moselle River with a main pavilion spanning four floors and a prominent tower at the front. The structure combines Art Nouveau features with neo-renaissance-inspired elements and includes wine cellars and storage spaces on the ground floor that are elevated to protect against flooding from the nearby river.

The castle was built between 1884 and 1887 by architect Heinrich Theodor Schmidt for businessman Eduard Puricelli and replaced an earlier church property from 1710. The construction followed the modern Art Nouveau style and stands in close proximity to the Moselle River, which influenced the choice of elevated cellar construction.

The castle displays Art Nouveau design features in its curved lines and ornamental details across the facade. These stylistic elements shape the overall appearance and make it a notable example of this artistic movement in the region.

Access to the grounds is possible, but some areas may be restricted, so it helps to check the current visiting situation beforehand. The castle sits directly on the Moselle and is easily reached from the town center of Bernkastel-Kues.

The castle interior contains an octagonal hall with sandstone pillars decorated with painted landscape scenes by Karl Julius Grätz and lead-glazed windows. These crafted details show the skill of specialized artists who worked on the elaborate interior decoration.
