Dannenberg

Dannenberg is a municipality along the Jeetzel River, shaped by marshland and artificial lakes where varied wildlife can be observed. The town sits at about 14 meters elevation in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district and serves as a residential and administrative center for the surrounding area.

The founding of Dannenberg Castle in 1153 by Count Volrad I marked the beginning of settlement and administration in this area. This castle became the center of regional rule and shaped the town's early development.

The town hosts regular events like Chamber Music Week in April and a Potato Festival in November that draw visitors from the region. These celebrations connect the place to its agricultural roots and local cultural life.

The place is best explored on foot or by bicycle, as distances are manageable and the landscape invites walking and cycling. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather, as the location in marshland brings damp conditions year-round.

Danish King Valdemar II was held prisoner in Waldemar Tower from 1223 to 1224, a fact that still gives this structure historical weight. This episode connects the town to medieval history involving both Scandinavia and northern Germany.
