Schloss Rosenau, Gothic Revival castle in Coburg, Germany

Schloss Rosenau is a Gothic Revival castle situated on a hill overlooking the Itz River and distinguished by black-stained furniture and colorful frescoes adorning its rooms. The interior spaces reflect different functions, from residential quarters to assembly halls, each outfitted with elaborate decorative details.

The castle was first documented before 1439 and underwent its most significant transformation during renovations between 1808 and 1817 under architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. This renovation phase shaped the Gothic appearance that defines the building today.

The Marble Hall serves as a space where private family moments and public celebrations have taken place, connecting the residence's personal history with shared experiences. Visitors can sense how this room bridges the intimate and formal uses of the palace.

The castle is open daily except Mondays from April through October, with guided tours available in German and English. The hilltop location means some walking is required, so visitors should be prepared for the climb to reach the entrance.

A naturalist named Baron Pernau conducted bird behavior research at the estate between 1704 and 1720, studying how young finches learned to sing. His experiments were among the earliest attempts to scientifically document animal behavior.
