Alzenauer Sande, Nature reserve in Alzenau, Germany
The protected area spans 95.5 hectares divided into three sections near Alzenau, featuring sand dunes and diverse flora across open sandy landscapes.
The sand dunes formed at the end of the Ice Age when wind deposits accumulated, leading to the creation of 2,500 hectares of sandy areas by 1820.
The preservation efforts since 1993 have created a sanctuary for 746 different species, including 186 listed in Germany's endangered species catalog.
The nature reserve includes information panels that detail the characteristics of the biotope and guide visitors through the protected sand formations.
Two distinct dunes in the area are officially designated as geotopes, with the Kühbruch dune displaying flat irregularities and Sauweide dune showing wavy surfaces.
