Sorpe Reservoir, Reservoir in Hochsauerlandkreis, Germany
Sorpe Reservoir is a body of water in Hochsauerlandkreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, stretching over several kilometers. The water fills a long valley between forested hills and forms one of the larger dams in the Sauerland region.
Between 1926 and 1935, the reservoir was built, with construction materials transported via the Röhrtal railway. The construction site was considered one of the largest in Europe at the time and employed hundreds of workers.
The water works belong to the Ruhrverband and supply drinking water to many households in the region. The facility also generates electricity from hydropower that feeds into the local grid.
The western shore offers several campsites and holiday homes, while the eastern bank is less developed and provides quiet hiking trails. The grassy areas by the water are good for breaks, and small coves invite visitors to linger.
The water produces more than 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of fish per hectare annually, attracting anglers from throughout the area. Trout and pike populate the deeper sections, while coarse fish are found closer to the shore.
