Ueckermünde Heath, Heath and forest area on the German-Polish border near Szczecin
Ueckermünder Heath, also known as Wkrzańska Forest, is a large area of heath, forest, and bogland straddling the border between northeastern Germany and northwestern Poland, near Szczecin. The terrain is mostly flat and includes rivers, wetlands, and open clearings spread across its interior.
The area remained largely unsettled for centuries because of its bogs and wetlands. In the 17th century, small glassworks and charcoal operations began to appear, shaping the way people related to this land.
The area can be explored on foot or by bike along marked trails that cross both sides of the border. Szczecin serves as a convenient base, making even a short visit manageable.
Since 2015, a pack of wolves has settled in the heath and has been raising pups there, watched closely by conservationists. White-tailed eagles and cranes also breed in the area, which is rare this close to a major city.
