Borkum Großer Leuchtturm, Brick lighthouse in Borkum, Germany

Borkum Großer Leuchtturm is a 60-meter-tall structure made of red bricks, featuring an octagonal base that transitions into a cylindrical tower with a conical top. The building still functions as a navigation aid for vessels passing through the nearby waters.

The current lighthouse was built in 1879 after its predecessor was destroyed by fire, with construction completed in just six months. Its completion restored a critical navigation aid for vessels traveling through the Ems estuary region.

The lighthouse has become a visual symbol of the island and is recognized by visitors as an iconic landmark of Borkum. Its distinctive red brick facade stands out prominently against the flat landscape, making it instantly recognizable for anyone arriving on the island.

Visitors can climb the tower during visiting hours to view the island and surrounding waters from above. Wearing weather-appropriate clothing is recommended, as the island experiences frequent wind and rain.

The lighthouse emits light in three different colors - white, red, and green - to assist ships navigating through the Ems estuary. This multi-colored signaling allows ship captains to quickly identify the tower's position and direction even in challenging weather conditions.
