Saarbrücken Castle

Saarbrücken Castle is a baroque structure on the left bank of the Saar River with elegant facades and thoughtful room arrangements. The building combines residential areas, administrative spaces, and a restaurant within its vaulted cellars.

The castle traces its origins to a first documented mention in 999 and evolved from a medieval fortress into a baroque residence. Its transformation unfolded over centuries and shaped the city's development throughout this period.

The castle bears the name of the city that grew from its medieval fortification. Visitors can trace different periods through the layered walls and rooms that make up the structure today.

The site is easily reached on foot and offers good views of the baroque architecture from outside. Visitors can book guided tours to explore the underground casemates or use the restaurant for dining inside.

Excavations in 1983 uncovered extensive underground defensive systems beneath the castle, including ancient ramparts and an intricate moat network. These archaeological findings reveal that the fortification was far larger than its visible walls suggest.
