St. Martin's Church, Gothic brick church in Landshut, Germany
St. Martin's Church is a Gothic brick building in Landshut that rises 130.60 meters high with a tower built entirely of brick without steel reinforcement. The structure was completed over centuries, with its interior containing a large crucifix and ornate stone furnishings.
Construction started in 1389 on the site of an earlier church from 1204 and continued for more than a century until completion around 1500. Multiple architects oversaw the ambitious building project spanning the late medieval period.
Inside, a monumental Gothic crucifix carved from a single lime tree trunk dominates the space, alongside a stone hexagonal pulpit. These artworks shape the interior and show the skill of medieval craftsmen.
The church is easily accessible from the street and offers an open view of its Gothic interior upon entering. Visitors should note that the interior remains cool and respect should be shown as this is an active parish church.
The foundation rests on five thousand wooden stakes driven below groundwater level, where constant moisture preserves the wood from decay. This medieval engineering solution enabled the construction of the soaring brick tower without modern steel support.
