Gehren, District in Ilmenau, Germany
Gehren is a district of Ilmenau located in the Ilm-Kreis administrative area of Thuringia at an elevation of around 475 meters. The area sits between the Thuringian Forest and Thuringian Slate Mountains, with forested landscapes dominating the region.
The settlement gained town privileges in 1855 and served as the administrative seat of Amt Gehren within the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen state until 1920. This role shaped its development as a regional center for several decades.
The St. Michael Church in Gehren was the workplace of organist Johann Michael Bach, whose daughter Maria Barbara became Johann Sebastian Bach's first wife.
The area has a Forest Education Center that operates as a training facility for the Thuringian State Forestry Administration. Visitors can learn about forestry practices and woodland management in this region.
A castle originally built here was transformed into a hunting lodge by the Schwarzburg counts and burned down in 1936, leaving only fragments of its outer walls. The ruins still stand as a reminder of the settlement's former status.
