Griesheim, Town center in Darmstadt-Dieburg, Germany

Griesheim is a municipality in Darmstadt-Dieburg with flat terrain situated between the Urneckar and Darmstadt Westwald forest. The townscape shows typical features of a German mid-sized town with residential neighborhoods and central squares.

Griesheim first appears in written records from 1165. Archaeological evidence, however, suggests people lived in the region as far back as around 4500 BCE.

The market square holds a statue of the Onion Woman, honoring the farming tradition that gave Griesheim its nickname as Onion City. This symbol still shapes how locals see their town and its roots in the land.

The town is easily reached by tram from central Darmstadt, and local bus lines connect it to nearby communities. When exploring on foot, the flat terrain works well for accessible walking.

August Euler established Germany's first airfield here in 1908, marking a turning point in German aviation. This pioneering achievement remains an important chapter in the early history of flight technology.
