The station opened on May 1, 1872 as part of the Berlin Ring Railway. After the Berlin Wall was built, operations ceased for decades until the station was fully reopened and restored in 2002.

The name comes from a 12th-century nobleman named Rudolf de Weddinghe, creating an amusing link to English marriage traditions. The station serves as a daily meeting point for the local community and connects different parts of the city together.
